Two nights ago, we had a little bit of a preview for you of the upcoming midterm elections in the US. 00:55 And I was saying, and I went through the polls and I look at these things very closely. The polls for Donald Trump going back to 2016, 2020, 2024 and the other midterms, you read those polls. And they've always been, if you read into them, very tight, very close. And people have been trying to read into them what they want. But the ones we had leading into this election were so, so pronounced. And the margins were so big that I was looking at them and thinking, Surely not, because it did seem it was pronounced big margins across the board. 01:30 And so when we had our conversation earlier in the week, I was saying, well, it's also a test of the pollsters, because they have come up with a very pronounced view of what's going to happen. 01:41 And they were right. 01:43 In some instances, perhaps they might have underestimated what was happening, but I think they pretty well got it right, and there has been this huge wave of Democrats going into the Congress, and to a very large extent, because of the significance of the victory, there are some controversial... And Democrats who would be targeted by the Republicans as extremists, and there's all the language that's used during a campaign, but because the victory's so big... 02:11 And I should say... 02:30 There's a couple of things I see here that you think, well, thanks, Scoop. The first one would be an analysis, and we've been talking a lot about the rise in interest rates, the effect on our economy, and the political impact on the government, given the response of both Anthony Albanese and Jim Chalmers. 02:48 And there's an analysis here, and this is one of the economic writers in the Australian newspaper, talking about how the RBA rate hike, and he's gone through it historically recently, the way it has an impact on the economy, saying that this time, and in recent times, it doesn't have the same impact because there are so many people who are boomers and older Gen Xs, I've been saying this for a week, who've not got mortgages, they've actually accumulated superannuation, and they're spending... 03:23 So it says, in previous decades, string of interest rates, inflation slows. But then this time you've got a whole string of interest rate rises, but you've got people who are with the demographics, superannuation, booming cash deposits. So people are in a situation where they can spend, the interest rate rise, huge number of people aren't affected by it. So they keep spending and the government keeps spending. And that's where we are. 03:51 as of now so i'm not sure that analysis is anything anything new to anyone who's thought it through and maybe maybe the the plight of david jones is also another one of those which probably shouldn't come as a surprise we look at bricks and mortar retail we look at our own behavior and how we deal with these things but i've heard today a lot of people who are lamenting the possible loss of david jones could go into administration at any time there are warnings tonight for instance we've got david jones gift cards Maybe you should use them because if it does go into administration, the administrator may not honour them. 04:27 Now, the question is, of course, who the administrator is and how they do it, but they're putting that warning out. And I guess the ghoulish nature of the way we do things, I've also noticed a couple of websites where the angle they're using is that Black Friday sales are coming up. Maybe the David Jones might be the one to go to because if they're in trouble, you just swoop in there and get yourself a bargain. But a lot of you, I know, are very, very upset about the loss of the David Jones. And look, later in the hour also, this lobbed a couple, oh, maybe two hours ago. 04:59 This is a listing, always, always interesting, these lists, of the 10. He was telling all Americans they were going to pay more for anything they couldn't possibly produce at home. I think if you think of Trump... who won that victory in 2024. 06:35 And then he had control of the House and the Senate. 06:39 And then he went through, he closed the borders. 06:42 He achieved a whole lot of things that he wanted to do, introduced tax cuts. And then he went ahead with the tariffs, which in the end, they're paid by domestic consumers. 06:53 And then he went ahead with the war in Iran. 06:56 And now the speculation is as to whether he's actually going to try and finish the war in Iran to try and get prices down. Because, of course, even though he's lost control of Congress with big wins for the Democrats in both the House and the Senate, he's still in charge. He's still in charge of the military. Terry, good evening. 07:27 Good evening, John. 07:27 All right. So I just wonder, can I just play just two bits here? Because I know there are members of the Democratic Socialists. We have the fellow who's been elected in Michigan, El Sayed. He's won that Senate seat there. But everyone's got interest in a couple. There's James Tallarico because they swept the board. 07:46 in texas extraordinarily and talarico uh he was up against a flawed candidate that donald trump had insisted on inserting into the the contest he's like a boy scout christian james talarico uh he was one stage described by donald trump as james talafrico and they embraced it they made t-shirts and made fun of donald trump because it was and they just they had a Huge victory. But this was how he began, remembering that Elon Musk threw about half a million dollars of Australian money into that campaign. 08:19 So this is how James Tallarico accepted victory. 08:24 We must end these corrupt forever wars that are driving up prices and killing our brave men and women in uniform. 08:35 And we must... 08:37 heal the deep spiritual corruption at the root of all of these crises. We must bridge the divides between us and repair the ties that bind us. 08:52 We forged a new kind of politics here in the Lone Star State, an answer to this decade of division. we showed that when working people come together across every dividing line we can do extraordinary things we won this race because people who are desperate for change now are going to get change yeah and he was focusing on the bread and butter issues of prices and the like and then in georgia john ossoff 09:21 who was re-elected to the Senate. He's now seen as, and he's Jewish. He's seen as a centrist. This is how he began his speech, John Ossoff. 09:32 In sweeping and decisive victories, the American people have rebuked the depravity, corruption and incompetence of the failed lame duck president, Donald J. Trump. 09:55 And if at times these last two years, amidst the ceaseless onslaught of brutality and indecency, you doubted whether our republic would survive, let tonight's results give you courage that the first light of dawn is on the horizon. 10:13 Look, that's just a sample. They're both very good orators. They're young. They're centrists. And I know, Terry, you and I have talked about this off air. There are democratic socialists and controversial figures in there, such as El Sayed. The question is going to be how this is all balanced in this majority they now have. 10:31 Well, that's right. And I think you've got to keep in mind too, John, that the Democratic Party... is not popular in the US, that people actually voting Democrat going by the exit polling who didn't actually like Democrats. They just didn't like Donald Trump and his administration even more. 10:48 And that's a factor I think the Democrats, certainly the way that they're claiming victory, are either really pushing down or are just ignoring. But certainly the fact that the Democrat... 11:01 caucus is going to be a very broad church of those centrists like Tallarico and Ossoff. And Ossoff particularly has been mentioned as a potential presidential candidate in 2028. But people like Abdul El Saeed are coming in in Michigan. I mean, he is, well... off to the far left. He's virulently anti-Israel. He's anti-Zionist. But people like our old friend Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will get emboldened to push her barrow as well. 11:33 So all this is going to happen in the next two years. And my view about this, John, is that I'm not a great Donald Trump fan, as I think you and listeners very well know. 11:43 But I am, by inclination, being conservative, more a supporter of the Republicans. But My thinking is that this is actually good for traditional Republicans. They can actually exercise the Trump demon over the next couple of years because I think the president has been absolutely not only shellacked, as Barack Obama might have put it back in 2010, but I think his power, his aura, his bubble has been burst. 12:10 Yeah. There's a couple of... See, I think there are some lessons here because I was looking at it in the last few days. I don't think there was any Democrat policy at all in relation to the economy. It was all essentially a reaction to Donald Trump in particular and the poor candidates that were run in Texas, in Michigan. They were choices of Donald Trump's and there's a range of them. You can go across the board. He intervened and put people in. Some dreadful, dreadful candidates which did have an impact on it. And there was no... There was no economic policy being put up in terms of how the Democrats are going to do this because they don't really have any leader. 12:46 That's why it's important people like Ossoff and others emerge. 12:50 But the question is, how much of a tussle will there be now among them to run for president? Because that starts pretty well straight away. But then what does Trump do? Because he's been rebuked. The Iran war and the consequences of it and the waste of that is now really the cause of all this at the heart of it all. 13:11 Does he think, I'll try and finish it off quickly, because there are suggestions he might go in there with some sort of nuke into Iran. You wouldn't put it past him, would you? 13:20 Anything's possible. Anything is possible with the president, I think, John. But on the other hand, in terms of some of the interviews he's been doing since the results became clear, he's been sounding surprisingly conciliatory to the Democrats, you know, that, oh, they've been working towards this for 12 years, that, you know, they'd ran a good race. Where were my... Well, I actually talked about the Republicans in the third person, so he didn't actually associate himself with the Republican Party. 13:47 But certainly I think he's showing... 13:50 degree of contrition that few people imagined he would but uh humble and donald trump i can't see it lasting more than 24 hours but when it comes to something totally out of the out of the ballpark particularly in relation to to iran look i think anything is possible but even i think the president would shrink from anything that looked like going nuclear 14:12 Yeah. The other thing in terms of lessons, because everyone's got a phone these days. So just as for the last couple of days you hear, I think even today, Anthony Albanese was suggesting that the governor of the Reserve Bank hadn't talked about anything other than oil prices and the war influencing inflation. And, of course, people can then go back and just have a look at what she actually said. In the same way that Donald Trump says... 14:40 oil prices, fuel prices are lower now than they were at the beginning of my term. And they go, no, they're not. So when you're lying like that and saying things that aren't true, it comes back on you. And that's a lesson for us as well. 14:53 I think that's right. And certainly I think the one big lesson... If I was Anthony Albanese and Jim Chalmers, I'd be taking away from what's happened with the midterms in the US is that clearly inflation, the cost of living, cost of petrol and yes, the war in the background as well. But certainly that those domestic cost of living kitchen table issues were sheeted home to the administration, sheeted home to the president. Yeah. 15:20 Look, there's another one that we should, because I think we've got a situation here. I think what I understand is that America is the number one place where they're building these data centres. We're number two in terms of these big data centres that are being built. Now, the protest against that in America is far more advanced than it is here. But in America, for instance, Greg Abbott, who lost the governorship of Texas, for those who follow this, that was an astonishing result. But he was being chipped by Trump in a message today calling him a late-term rhino, Republican in name only, because late in the piece he started opposing data centres because he could recognise how much opposition there was to them in Texas. 16:03 Now, he did it too late, but it's happening here. The opposition is building everywhere in relation to these data centres. At the moment, there's a kind of a unity ticket on them, Terry. But... There's a lot of anger and concern about the data centres, where they're being built, and the effect they're having here. 16:20 Well, that's very true. And look, I can't really comment too much on the US and data centres because I haven't seen the data, but certainly it has been an issue chipping away in the background. But I don't think it was as front and centre as cost of living. But yes, I think people are seeing all the wonders of it, the potential of it, the jobs and productivity side of it, but they're also seeing the potential consequences. Even the anthropic IPO, the public offering, The IPO CEO has been talking about the risk of AI to humanity in general, which I think is extraordinary if you're trying to sell something. 16:54 But I think he's also accepting... And the effect on jobs as well. That's right. Effecting, but he actually accepts that there are sort of downsides to go with the upside. And... 17:07 But Donald Trump is one who sees no downsides. He's been very bullish about AI. And I think certainly the Albanese government has been very bullish about it as well in terms of they see the job creation, but they don't see the risk of job losses. Yeah, yeah. 17:20 So we'll see. But it is going to be fascinating to see how he reacts because he's there for another two years. 17:28 The other thing about it is, if you look at the next election, if you followed it closely, there was Vavaswami in the governor's race in Ohio ran an ad against the Democrat candidate, which was universally condemned by her mother, who's obviously a troubled woman and who'd essentially run away with the man who'd sexually abused the woman, the Democrat candidate. The ad was condemned by everyone, but Trump decided to stick with it. 17:58 And then Vance came out in support of running the ad. And a lot of people, I heard people quoting people, Republican operatives, saying that is going to be fatal for him if he wants to run for the presidency. Vance, you think because Florida held, and that's where Rubio comes from, maybe Rubio, as you said earlier, his stocks have been strengthened by all of this. 18:20 Look, I actually think that the only way that J.D. Vance is going to actually be a presidential contender in 28 is if he actually succeeds to the presidency beforehand. I'm not wishing ill of Donald Trump, but I think he is so welded onto the president. that he will go down with him unless he actually succeeds in one way or another. But the other side of it is I think there is an issue there, the Ramaswamy stupidity actually highlights the tone of the Trump administration and of the president, its coarseness, its crassness, its ugliness, the use of insult as a normal way of intercourse with people. 19:02 I think if Donald Trump was more like, say, Ronald Reagan or Barack Obama in terms of his style, in terms of his willingness to have a sense of humour and his engaging with people in a civilised way, the damage may still have been done, but I don't think it would have been done as badly as it has been. 19:21 Yeah. And so you've got this, I described him, people can look it up, he's Boy Scout, he's a very, he's a Christian, this fellow of Tallarico. And so when Trump called him Tallarico, I said earlier, they turned it into a T-shirt and in a very subtle way, mocking Donald Trump and feeding into that, the way people reel back at the coarseness of the insults. 19:44 Well, that's right. I mean, that style of unpresidential coarseness is really, I think, come back to bite to Donald Trump well and truly. But I think for many of us who actually agree with what he might have been trying to do in relation to strengthening the US economy and controlling borders and so on, just reject the man. I mean, the fact that he is the standard bearer for the United States and has diminished the United States so much around the world in terms of the simple way he insults his allies, let alone embraces his enemies. 20:20 I just think, again, he's reaping his own whirlwind, John. 20:25 8.30, 7.30 in Queensland. Just looking at one of the messages here. I've got a lot of messages, but this one says, if we had midterms here, Albo would have had his bum handed to him on a plate. Look, I'm sure that's right. And you know how it would have gone, Tara. It would have been, well, what's your plan? And like in the US, where the Democrats didn't go in with any real plan at all, but they were just feeding on the backlash, people would be going, I don't care. I'm going to vote for someone else. That would be the case today, would it not? 20:53 I think that's very much the case, and certainly I think the Coalition has not done enough in terms of what it would say as the alternatives in terms of what it would do around policy, around savings and tightening belts. 21:07 I think Angus Taylor made a good start last week in terms of identifying savings in terms of green programs and other things that the Coalition would run. 21:15 But really, I think at the moment, the electorate is so angry about the state of our economy, the state of our cost of living, the state of our interest rates, that I think it doesn't really matter, which is one of the reasons, of course, that One Nation is doing so well. 21:31 That's right. Well, of course, as we, every time we talk, we're getting now closer to that Victorian election. I'm going to get your thoughts on all of that. 21:39 Anthony Albanese being in the Caribbean at the moment. I want to quickly take Mark's call because we were touching on interest rates and this has been a conversation for a couple of days and I did make the point and it's been now subject to a lot of analysis that there's a whole cohort of older people that get affected by rising interest rates and that blunt instrument, the cliche we use. Mark, what do you want to say? 22:01 Yeah, John, very interesting what's happening in America. Hopefully that'll happen here with Albanese. But I think it's 2026. You would think we would have more advanced ways to effectively slow down the economy. Now, they put interest rates up. 22:26 Four weeks is not going to be anywhere near the time it's going to take for that interest rate hike to get into the system to slow down inflation. Whatever happened 12 months ago or 18 months ago, we're living that now. Interest rates go up and they expect that to slow down an economy. They're wrong. I've been in the police for 20 years. I've been dealing with in aged care sector. Now, one strategy alone is not going to make any difference at all. 23:03 You need people. Today, you would think those people responsible for this part of the inflation should sit down together and collectively work out together what their responsibilities are in slowing down that part of the inflation. Yeah. 23:24 Okay, look, just finish off, Mark, one final bit. Can we just say it? 23:29 He, Chalmers, blames everyone else. We really need the government to slow down their spending. Of course. We need the fuel prices to go down. We need electricity prices to go down. We've got to get rid of net zero because that's cost us too much money. And now we're all paying for it. I've got a couple of kids and they've got a mortgage. He's already working two jobs. I know, I know. 23:58 Mark, we had a caller last night talking about her son, who he's at the absolute outside of the envelope. And Terry, you've spoken to people like this. They've got no more money. So the idea of raising interest rates so that they then stop spending, well, they haven't got anything to spend. 24:15 Interesting call from Mark. Thank you for that. Terry, what do you reckon, what he was saying? If that interest rate hike was going to have an impact, we would on Monday be talking about how the Black Friday... Are they this Friday, the Black Friday sales? This Friday, are they? No, I think fortnight's time. Oh, fortnight, yeah. So, okay, we'd be talking about the Black Friday sales in a couple of weeks' time. This has been the softest ever. 24:38 It's been reduced substantially. The Black Friday sellers are all going, you reckon that's going to happen? 24:45 But I think Black Friday might be a good indicator of how the economy is going. I mean, Michelle Bullock, the government of the Reserve Bank, was basically saying, wasn't she, yesterday, that it feels like we're in a recession now and the way things are going, we could well be in a recession because we're barely growing. 25:03 Haven't you had, there are certain businesses that have been talking about, and I know they're struggling with all the extra on costs and all the red tape and the like, but they're also, and you talked to them, The people aren't spending as much in there because they haven't got as much to spend, isn't it? And the Black Friday sales are the last Friday of November, Terry. Now, see, I look at this and think, isn't there November 13th next Friday? So next Friday, 5th, 6th, 7th. 25:30 Is it next Friday, November 13th? 25:32 Black Friday actually started. It's the day after Thanksgiving. 25:35 No, I'm talking about the 13th. When's the 13th? Is there a Friday the 13th coming up? Next Friday, yep. We used to call that Black Friday, but now we've got the Black Friday sales, and even that, you have an argument over where it came from, and it's been imported here, and the sales are on. You get a message about it every couple of minutes on your phone, the Black 25:56 And worse still, the Christmas ads have already started too, John. 26:00 So clearly retailers want us to spend and spend big as soon as possible. I mean, that's the message that I get just as observing it as a political issue. 26:10 Look, I'll come back in a moment. And look, the fellow that we were talking to, Bill, saying there is another way to manage inflation. Well, of course, we've been saying that. It's government spending. And there's been some more comments made by Anthony Albanese on that. So we'll come back in a moment. But I did go to my local Woolworths on the way to work today. 26:27 And there was a Christmas tree with lights and little Christmas trees all the way through the place. And I looked down and thought, it's the 4th of November. But you know what? 26:36 I don't care because I love, if we can have a little bit of joy and light, it can't be a bad thing, can it, Terry? Surely. 26:43 No, but I always like the way that the big retailers go from festival to festival. Halloween finishes, Christmas trees go up. Yeah, why not? 26:51 Come on. 22 minutes to 9, 18 Queensland. 26:55 20 minutes to 9 to 80 if you're listening to us in Queensland. We have had the Prime Minister at the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in the Caribbean. I have made the observation, and we've dealt with it here in a fair bit of detail, the number of visas that are now open-ended that need to be dealt with if we're going to pull back on immigration, and one of those involves the... 27:16 the very loosening of the working holiday visas for people from the UK up to the age of 35 and that they don't have to do the 88 days in regional areas. He wants that change. So if you can get something out of Andy Burnham, that's a good idea. But he has been overseas while this has happened. And, Terry, we were talking before about saying it as it is and not looking slippery. In Donald Trump's case, he just says stuff that's completely untrue and people can just look at it. That's not true. But in Anthony Albanese's case, I think it's even worse when you're being slippery. So, for instance, you have this view which was put out years ago, you don't comment on domestic issues when you're overseas, and that's always been broken when necessary. 27:55 So he was asked today over there, Anthony Albanese, about the comments of the Reserve Bank Governor and what they might do. And he did say that they're going to look at more spending cuts, what that'll be. We'll have to wait and see. 28:08 But this is what he had to say. Have a listen. Wow. I didn't see the press conference, but I'm sure that Michelle Bullock would have acknowledged that oil prices have had an impact. 28:18 So if you're the Prime Minister, you're at the Commonwealth Government meeting, wouldn't you say, can you let me know, I want the Reserve Bank statement and I want a transcript of what the Reserve Bank Governor said? I mean, in my job, I had to look. You were interested in it, Terry, but the Prime Minister didn't see it, didn't hear the comments. And then, of course, when you say, I'm sure she would have said, wouldn't have blamed oil prices. When you say she would have blamed oil prices, people can then just go bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, and they find this. 28:50 I want to be very clear that we are not tightening monetary policy because of the direct impact of oil prices on inflation. I know there is confusion in the community, so I want to be very clear. Monetary policy cannot impact global oil prices. 29:06 Rather, the tightening in monetary policy is to address domestic capacity pressures. 29:11 And so, Terry, that sort of slipperiness, it just keeps piling on, doesn't it? One after the other. 29:18 Well, like you said, he should have actually been briefed by somebody before he went and did that presser anyway, because it was bound to come up. So poor staff work let him down. But on the other hand, he was quite happy to... 29:29 That's fine, but I know you worked as a staffer and I've worked as a reporter, but wouldn't you, Terry, and you've obviously thought what would it be like to be in Bob Hawke's shoes or John Howard's shoes, wouldn't you be going, I want to see what was said? 29:44 Even if you didn't have a staffer around you, you can open up your iPad and have a look. 29:49 I was actually about to say that, John. Sorry, Terry. I've cut in. Sorry, mate. But, yeah, look, I think he also was going to say exactly what he wanted to say, which is what so many politicians do when they come into a studio and talk to you or Ben Fordham or others. I reject the premise of your question, but this is what I really think. And that's what he wanted to get across. He wanted to get across the lie, basically, that it's all to do with oil prices, energy and the gulf. No, it's all to do, as Michelle Bullock was saying, about our domestic capacity, our productivity, the fact that we're spending, spending, spending. 30:26 But certainly, I think one part of the economy, as I think Mark earlier was saying, is the government. I mean, the government spends 25% of GDP plus GDP. 30:38 Can't they rein that in a bit? It's not just federal government too, John. We're talking state governments as well. 30:43 That's the other question, isn't it? Because I had a look. I did it a couple of nights ago. I was using AI, apart from finding the Melbourne Cup using AI, which wasn't that hard. But I also used AI to ask the question about spending cuts in the late 80s because Paul Keating came into this radio station and talked about spending cuts. If we don't do something, it will become a banana republic. He generated that sense of urgency. He told people, look, we're in big trouble here. We need to do something. And then there were a series of measures to cut back on government spending as a proportion of GDP in the later part of the 80s, which were very significant. 31:21 They got the budget back into balance. And then they ran some surplus budgets under Paul Keating in the latter part of the 80s before Trump. There was an international move, and they misjudged everything, and we went into that recession, which is another story. But I think the message there was you don't just say, oh, we've been doing a good job, but we might have to continue it with spending cuts. Say, listen, there's a real problem here. Everyone's hurting. I recognize it. To generate that, bring people with you if you're going to go out and make some spending cuts, unless you're not going to do them. 31:51 Yeah, we've all got to do our bit. That's a simple message for the Prime Minister and the Treasurer to get across. And when it comes to doing their bit, they have to make sure that when it comes to the budget update that's just around the corner, that it shows that they're going to bring in some net savings. So they're actually going to spend less overall. My sense is both the Treasurer and the Prime Minister are saying, well, we're looking at savings, but they're not actually committing to them. And I think they should go hard now and say, we will find savings. 32:19 Yeah, and look, you can look at it as a political question as to whether politically it'd be good for them, but there's a small issue of what's the right thing to do for the country? And so I know you're talking about the coalition in Victoria where Jess Wilson looks like she's on track to win the election and potentially be a majority government, that they can win in their own right, the coalition, and yet I know she did an interview with Neil Mitchell on his podcast and he was pressing her on, okay, everything is... 32:48 All the spending that's going, Victoria's the worst in the country, what are you going to do about it? And she was equivocal on that, and I know that's one of your concerns. 32:58 Well, that's right. She's talking about $24-odd billion of savings over the next five years from a public service hiring piece. 33:07 And some other things. But that's, in my mind, that's just not enough. I mean, we're talking about in Victoria, the Liberals want to cut taxes. And I think that's right. They want to actually spend more in terms of fixing the problems that Labor is leaving. And that's right. But it all has to be paid for. Tax cuts have to be paid for. The deficit is huge. It's going to get huger. That has to be paid down. I think I've said it to you. I've said it. I've written it in the paper. I think that it's important that the incoming government, whoever it happens to be on the 29th of November in Victoria, actually says we are going to have to do some stuff up. 33:45 It's not going to be popular. You're not going to get everything you want. I mean, Jess Wilson at least is saying it's going to be not something that happens overnight. It's going to take years to get it right. That's something. But I think you've got to go further. And I think you can go further because the public aren't mugs. Voters aren't mugs. They understand what has to be done. They just hope it's not going to be too drastic. No voter ever wants that. 34:10 But certainly they know that we can't go on the way we are and that politicians just can't keep promising the earth, as is happening, I think, in the Victorian campaign. 34:20 Twelve and a half to nine to eight in Queensland, just on Victoria, because we've got the election in Victoria. I think it's that Black Friday weekend when the election's on, what, 28th, I think, last weekend in Victoria. Then you've got the election in March of next year in New South Wales. Now, I think there's a thing happening in New South Wales. I could call it the Mike Newman factor. He's emerged. He's articulate. He's got an impressive background. He's moving around, and he's starting to develop some sort of profile that says, well, that bloke's competent. He looked competent. And people didn't know who Chris Minns was before he was elected. 34:53 They hardly knew who he was. They don't know who people are in state politics. And so in New South Wales, there's a sense that they'll look at Mike Newman, and he's part of the Pauline Hanson thing, and they're going to go, yeah, I might give that a go. 35:08 In Victoria, you've got this Warren Livingston, the leader there. Pickering. Is that what his name is? Warren Pickering. 35:15 I've got to apologise to Warren Livingston, who's the founder of the Fanatics. Now, what's his name? Warren Pickering. Pickering, okay. He's dressed himself up in a suit and he's brushed himself up to look pretty impressive in terms of look, but he's a bit flaky, isn't he, compared to, say, someone like Mike Newman? 35:36 Well, he has no real experience in terms of running anything in terms of his background. Yes, he's had a colourful past, he's fronted up for that and Bill Marks for doing it. But in terms of being a potential Premier, in terms of having that experience, in terms of having that demonstrated competence, no, I don't think he's the man. Now... 46:22 The point there is, of course, if you've got a carport or a garage, but if you're doing it outside and there's one of the outside charges or, you know, we live in roughly the same area of Sydney, there's a lot of charges on power poles now and people go up. So if it's raining, I'm assuming that it's okay because if there was any danger, they'd be telling you, wouldn't they? Surely. 46:45 Yeah, yeah. Technically, they're waterproof, John. Technically, they're waterproof. So basically, they're designed to be weatherproof. They're designed to be used outdoor in cold temperatures, hot temperatures, rain, all that sort of stuff. If we get a massive downpour, like our listeners in Queensland had a huge downpour last week or the week before. We had one in Sydney a couple of nights ago. If you're in that situation, I wouldn't be walking around with a high voltage plug downpour. You know, messing around outside in torrential rain. 47:18 But if you've plugged your car in and it starts to rain, don't worry about it. It'll be fine. 47:21 Because I put it in the same basket as, remember when you'd get on a plane and they'd tell you to turn off your phone? Yes. And you had to have your phone off. Yes. And, of course, it was really the honour system. So turn your phones off. And I remember I thought if there was any way that turning your phone on was going to affect the navigation system or the safety of the plane, they wouldn't be sitting in your pocket. Now, see, I am trying to do what we do here, which is talk about cars, talk about driving and deal with all of the feedback we get. But it's very difficult because I'm getting messages about, did you get a letter from the king? All of this stuff. 48:39 Well, you should, technically. 48:40 But in the middle of all that, there are people who are seeking information from it. That's right. 48:45 We're here for a serious public service. 48:47 Hamish is in Wide Bay in Queensland, thinking about buying a 2324. It says here, full fat. Now, I've got to remember, a lot of these things could be voice to text. 48:58 What he means by full fat is all the bells and whistles, all the features, all the optional equipment. 49:03 I didn't know that. All right, that's the language. All right. A full fat VW Tiguan R. Yep. 49:09 What should I watch out for? So that's what he wants to buy, 2324. He's full fat. 49:15 So he's obviously going to go into the market. What should he look out for? 49:19 I would just make sure it's got a full service history, ideally from Volkswagen. That taken care of. 49:26 And once you know that the kilometres are verified and it's been looked after, go for it. That's a really, really special car. It's fast. It's engaging. They look good. They're a great thing to drive. They're obviously an SUV, but they're very sporty. Any Volkswagen with an R badge is sporty. And if it's got a service history and it's been looked after, go for it. I know a few people who've got them and they love them. 49:48 Okay. Just a question on this, because you may have your car serviced and you've got the regular service and you've kept the logbooks. 49:55 say you've got a Toyota, Mazda, whatever it might be, and you've serviced it from the place you bought it, and the service is done, they do a really bells and whistles job, or you've got the MyCar, it used to be Kmart, I think it's MyCar now, isn't it? The franchises, and they're all franchises, and the people are, you know, a lot of them, I know people that have them, they're very good. So if you've had that done, And is there a difference? Can you tell? Are there mechanics and mechanics? 50:24 No, you're not going to tell. When a new car is released, and let me say on the record here, I've got a lot of friends who are independent mechanics. A lot of my close mates are independent mechanics. 50:37 when a new car is released a service bulletin is issued with that car for the likes of say Toyota or Mazda or whatever and that's why a lot of the independent mechanics have been pushing for them to be able to access this service information so that they can work on these cars Now, there's a whole host of little things and special things that every car needs that's different from one car to another. And it's very difficult for the independent mechanics to keep up with all of that stuff. So if a car broadly, a new car, say it's less than 10 years old, if it's been serviced every 10 or 15,000 kilometres, whatever the logbook asks, there's no major difference if it's been serviced by Toyota Australia or by John Smith Automotive down the road there's no major difference at all for me the main thing is that it has been serviced regardless of who's done the service work if you're wondering whether you could put a bit of a premium in terms of what it's worth when you sell it if it's been serviced by the dealer probably yes okay 51:36 All right. 131873 is the number. And look, James is asking this question. And again, this is this question. He says, if I bought a hybrid, now again, I'm assuming here that it's a plug-in hybrid. So we know the hybrid that I have and that we've had for 20, 25 years, those hybrids, they have a small electric motor in there and it works in tandem with the petrol motor. and it recharges as you go. So you don't charge it. But I'm assuming what he's saying is, how often would I need to charge it if it was mainly using the engine or minimum battery power? 52:08 So what he's saying there is, well, plug-in hybrid. 52:14 Well, give us the answer on that one. 52:16 let me just let me just say this as simply as i can if you buy a plug-in hybrid right so specifically a hybrid that you have to plug in to charge so it has electric range whether it's 40 kilometers 50 or 110 if you buy a plug-in hybrid and you don't plug it in to charge it, there's no point owning it. You've wasted your money and you've bought the wrong vehicle. Because the best way to own a plug-in hybrid is to plug it in every night at home or every day at work or at the factory or wherever it is that you work, if you can't charge it at home, to plug it in every day and when you start your driving, you start with a full charge. 52:54 Because if you don't do that, what you're doing is you're pulling around the whole electrification system but driving with petrol and using more fuel than you need to because you're never using the electric power so the amount that that vehicle is going to recoup while you drive it around is very little compared to plugging it in and charging it conventionally so with a plug-in hybrid the best way to be efficient and to use as little fuel as possible is to always have it charged 53:22 Yeah. See, I know a fellow who, he's got himself a BYD Shark. Yep. And so I think he charges it regularly and I reckon he would probably use it, he might drive 50, 60 k's a day. Yep. And so he would then drive on the battery. Yep. 53:39 Rarely use any fuel. 53:40 Recharge it. And then I don't think he – maybe on the weekends he may go a bit further than that. But the question then for people like that is if you're only going 50, 60 k's, you're recharging on a regular basis, how often should you just make sure you – 53:56 turn that engine over because it might never be used it'll prompt you to do it if the fuel's been sitting there for too long so the system will prompt you to do it most of the time if it doesn't i recommend that people just have a quarter of a tank or less than half a tank of fuel so that then when you do go through it you burn it down um i've got i've got a friend who's got a gwm canon plug-in hybrid so the gwm version of what byd does he's kept a really detailed log and the first 12 000 kilometers that he did in it from when he bought it only 2,000 of them used petrol. 54:28 The other 10,000 were all on electric power because he was running around town. So if you do it that way, if you charge it regularly, you can really minimise and almost completely neutralise the amount of fuel that you use for your regular driving. 54:42 Okay. 131873 is number. I've always bought cars from the 50s to the late 70s. Easy to buy an old car and just rebuild the motor box. Yep. 56:09 And they were good mechanically. Look, I should say, because I think we did this, we did have the fellow on at Pickles Auctions, that's right, because they were selling the first wave of cars that had been taken under Novated Leases. And in fact, I think these might have been fleet cars. And they found the battery was still up at around 95%, and the prices were pretty good. But that, I think, was when... The second-hand car market was going really well, and I think they were snapped up really quickly. But that's just their specific ones that were very well serviced and looked after. 56:41 Well, the other thing too is, John, with electric vehicles, it's how long is a piece of string. So as I've said to the listeners before, if you buy an electric vehicle and from day one you only ever charge it on a public supercharger, a real fast one – you're going to degrade the battery faster than somebody who charges it slowly at home overnight every time from when they buy it. So it depends on how it's being treated. The good news is it's pretty easy to check the battery health, as you mentioned, Pickles does there, and any of the reputable resellers do that so that if you or I or any of the listeners buy a secondhand one, you know exactly what you're getting. 57:17 The issue is that... 57:19 We're talking about cars now that might be four, five, six years old at the most. The issue for me is when they're going to be 30, 40, 50 years old, because effectively I can, as your message there says, I can go and buy a 50-year-old car tomorrow, and provided I put a bit of elbow grease into it, I can get it running pretty much the way it did when it was brand new 50 years ago. electric vehicles are going to require a level of engineering a level of technicality a level of computer smarts and understanding if anything serious goes wrong with them now i'm not assuming that everybody is a mechanic that can fix a 50 year old car but electric vehicles are a hell of a lot more complex even though they're simpler mechanically because they've got less moving parts and all of those things the short answer john is we just don't know we really don't know what they're going to be like when they're 20 30 40 years old 58:10 Here's a question, because we've got solar panels all over our roof now, and we've got a battery. So we actually are off the grid now in summer. But during the day, we're generating a lot more than we actually use. So I haven't looked lately, but I know a few years back, it was a few years back, I was looking at Nissan Leafs, the early ones, which were... 58:35 They were an electric car, and I think they were dirt cheap because the battery, I think it was down 100km or whatever, because it was so old. But if you're just using your car to go to the shops and back, and you can charge it during the day in your carport off the solar panels, then... 58:56 that very cheap purchase could work for some people. Well, it could work for some people. Like a golf buggy, really. 59:01 Yeah, yeah, yeah, absolutely like a golf buggy. A perfect example is Leaf, right? So the early Leafs, they're down now to around about 90 or 100 kilometre range. That's right. That's what I saw, yeah. Yeah, they used to be up near 180, 200-ish when they were new. Got a little bit better with the second gen. But for a lot of people, if you only do 20, 30, 40 kilometres in a day maximum, that doesn't matter. So you look at one that might be $9,000 or $10,000 as a second-hand car and you think, okay, well, I can make sense of that. So I think that, you know, it's an option, but I guess what it does is it means buyer beware because, you know, you've got to then understand that if you're buying one that's got a dramatically shorter range than it had when it was new. 59:42 How much lower can it go? 59:43 That's right. Yeah, exactly. Can it go to 10 kilometres or 20 kilometres? 59:47 So you'd want to be buying it for, you know, a pretty, you know, a very low price. 59:51 Very low price. Okay. Okay. 59:52 All right. Now, you've mentioned this before. How is it so? Does it mean they're not for sale yet till they get a rating? Can they sell it without them? How does this work? 65:43 No, they can sell it without a rating if they want to. So a manufacturer can bring a car here and sell it without an ANCAP rating. A lot of the commercial vehicles, a lot of the full-size trucks, the big SUVs, the really expensive stuff like Porsche 911s don't have an ANCAP rating, Lambos, Ferraris, those sorts of things, they don't have ANCAP ratings. So you can do it without an ANCAP rating if you want to. Often, if the manufacturer doesn't provide it to ANCAP, ANCAP would have to buy it. And because ANCAP's got a limited budget, they can't just go out and buy everything. 66:15 So what they would do is they would then put it on a list in order of importance. So if it was a medium SUV, they would make that more important than some really expensive sports car. But effectively, if the NRMA is saying it's unrated, it means it hasn't yet been tested by ANCAP. 66:31 Okay. Neil says, battery memory, what happens with charging regularly without letting the battery deplete down to a low level to maximise the charge? Does that put the battery to a charge pattern? So I think they say with phones, don't they, you need to deplete them. So what about that? 66:46 Well, with modern battery technology, they're significantly better than they used to be, right? And we know with our own mobile phones, for argument's sake, that they don't deplete the way that they used to when they're two years old, for argument's sake. With a lot of electric vehicles, they would say, we recommend that you run them between 20% and 80%, say, most of the time, and don't always charge them up to 100% just for the sake of doing it. If you do always charge it up to 100%, you're probably going to deplete the battery over time more than someone who runs it between 20 and 80. 67:20 But it's not a massive, like that doesn't make a massive difference. So what he was saying there was the management of the little battery burst you can get in your car is part of the game with Formula One, isn't it? 69:18 Yeah, well, what they do, I think... I haven't kept up with the rules and regs of Formula E. When they started, they just ran a certain number of laps that they knew the cars could cover without the batteries going flat, and they were super fast. But what I think they do now... I think they have a half race stopover where they actually put a new battery pack in them. So like a pit stop where they, you know, where you would refuel a normal car, they put a new battery pack in it. But yeah, Formula One's got quite a high level of electrification in the powertrain. Anything that has a network connection, so phones, when you put your computers on, Wi-Fi, any of that sort of stuff, and cars that have four or 5G SIM cards in them and a connection to the network, any of that stuff can be hacked. Now, the question then becomes, Why would anyone want to hack them? 70:45 Would you hack them in big numbers? What's the benefit of doing that? All of those things. But the question, Hugo, is absolutely legitimate. And everything I understand and I've been told is that, yes, you can hack into them. How much you can then control once you've hacked into them or what you can actually do and not do, I guess, varies depending on the car and how the systems run. But in short, yeah, you can absolutely hack into them. 71:12 So you've talked about this and there have been people talk about it, hacking into the cars. And I keep thinking about a movie or a TV show, one of these dystopian things might have been an episode of Dark Mirror where all these Teslas just stopped working. 71:26 Absolutely. Look, the point Hugo's making there is absolutely legitimate in the same way that people can hack into the back end of a system or hack into anything that's connected to Wi-Fi or 4G or 5G if they really want to. And we're often told, don't worry about it, the security is good. And then they say, oh, we've had a security breach. But in the same way that you can hack into any of those systems, you can, in theory, hack into a connected vehicle if you want to. 71:50 Okay. Okay. Now, thank you for the call. 71:53 Ford is launching a cheaper Ute than the Ranger. So this is in the US, I'm assuming. So anything that's cheaper we want to know about, what's the story? 72:02 Yeah, so basically they've confirmed it will be a similarly sized vehicle to the Ranger, and they've confirmed that it will go to international markets. Now, it's going to debut in 2027, allegedly, but what I think is important is that the quotes from Ford in the US, and this is from the boss, had said that the base material cost for the truck will be 20% lower than today's Ranger. So that would mean that in theory, you could make it 20% more affordable than a Ranger if you wanted to. 72:36 It's unclear at the moment where it'll be manufactured or what they'll call it. But as far as we're aware, it's going to exist. It's going to be available from 2027. And if it comes to Australia, because Ford said international markets, and we know with Ranger, it goes to 120 something markets around the world. Ford has said international markets. If it's available and if it comes to Australia in right-hand drive, it would have to be cheaper than a Ranger. 72:59 Very good. All right. They're really good in the way that they do what a dual cab is expected to do. So I think that if you want to go and test drive one, by all means, go and do it. And the big one for me that I think is really going to shake things up is the Cherry Stockman. So it should be available either very late this year. I've had a look at one. 74:32 We haven't driven it yet. It's either very late this year or very early next year. I think it'll be priced similarly to where the MG is. So the MG starts from 53 plus on roads and goes up to 61 drive away, I think it is at the top. 74:48 We reckon the cherry is going to be priced almost the same as that. It looks fantastic. But Dr Vanessa Parotta, she's the New South Wales Australian of the Year. I've had her on the program a few times. She's one of those people who has so much passion. She knows whales in and out. She's a marine scientist. So I'm guessing, well, I think you could probably say, for a Seinfeld fan, she'd be a marine biologist, Dr. Vanessa Perotta. And look, she assesses whale health. She is the founder of Wild Sydney Harbour, this project to try and preserve and document the marine life in Sydney Harbour. 86:26 And she talks about trying to make sure that young people are aware of the science and the biology of all this. So she's the Australian of the Year. 86:36 And then I'm just having a look here. The Senior Australian of the Year, Dr. David Cook. He's a pilot doctor. His life has been spent... This bloke's 84. His life's been spent caring for patients in remote and regional Australia. So he loves flying, but he's a doctor. So he's been part of the Royal Flying Doctor Service. And he's been going through New South Wales, but also into the Northern Territory and North Queensland. And he's actually been working since... 87:04 Since 1988, he's based himself around that area around Port Macquarie and Southwest Rocks. And I'll mention two others because these are the people that should get recognised. 87:13 The young Australian is Danny Shuten. Now, he's the creator of community shark bite kits. These are little bleeding control stations that are getting installed at beaches across the country. Now, he survived a shark attack. There's a friend of his survived a shark attack. and a bystander had fashioned a makeshift tourniquet. And so Danny thought, well, there's a need here. 87:36 And so he has designed these community shark bite kits. And from what I can understand, they've got everything you need in a drama like this, and they're being installed at beaches. And he wants to have them at all beaches, because most of our beaches are unpatrolled. And so if something dramatic happens, these shark bite kits are there. So that's... 87:57 such a good thing that he's doing and it's being recognised. And then I've looked at the local heroes. It's Jill Ashley and Paul Ireland. They founded Shore Track about six years ago to support disengaged young people. This is the Nambucca Valley in the New South Wales mid-north coast. And again, when I hear stories like this, I think of my late friend, Father Chris Riley, who founded Youth Off The Streets and his thought that you can... You can get people on track. 88:28 You never write them off. And what they've been doing, they've been assisting young people, disengaged, and they've had 86% success rate. They have a certificate to pathway. They provide mentoring, meals, transport, trade-based training, employment pathways. They work with local businesses, community and government agencies, built support networks. And so these marginalised, disengaged young people, they attain independence. 88:53 They start working, they start contributing, and there's a resource of people that can do work within the community. 89:00 And people like Jill and Ashley are changing their lives, creating a small workforce as well, which is needed in these regional areas. Well done then. What a great story. That is sure track. And they've been recognised as well. And all those little organisations, when I say little, they're organisations, they're the glue that hold communities together. Further analysis. Secondary test results expected to take at least four weeks to arrive. They've issued a formal statement about this and Sydney officials have confirmed that he's informed the club of the stop. And they've passed it on to the AFL Integrity Unit. What is it? 101:56 It's a very interesting story. And people love guessing games. And, you know, we're very limited in terms of clues. although in another way we're not but i'll explain that so what's been going on for the last couple of months there is a very high profile celebrity in the uk who is very well known here household name who's been trying to keep his name out of a story about allegations relating to sexual misconduct with about 30 women so two media outlets itn which is a TV network, and The Guardian newspaper did investigations into this man and got people to speak on the record. 102:36 And as they quite rightly have to do, they went to him and said, can we have your reaction to these allegations? Now, his reaction to it was to get injunctions from both those reports being read or seen and also then to not allow any media outlets to use his name in association with allegations on the basis of his mental health and he's said publicly or his legal team have said publicly that he's attempted to take his own life twice and And if he is named, it's very likely he will take his own life again. 103:13 So it's very much, I think, emotional blackmail on the legal system that if I get named, then, you know, that, you know, the outcome could be very sad and tragic. So what happened last night, our time, he appeared, well, he didn't appear, but the case was brought to court again and he lost the He lost his appeal. So now the media outlets can report his name, except he has been given a one week temporary injunction to decide if he's going to go ahead and appeal or not. 103:46 If he doesn't appeal, then the name will be out there everywhere. And look, as I say, we can't play guessing games, but I can tell you that his name has been in the papers and in the news a lot recently anyway, for not good reasons. So you almost kind of wonder, like, what's he worrying about? His career and his reputation is pretty much trashed anyway. 104:09 All right. OK, well, I'm still guessing, but I might do a bit of work on it overnight and a lot of our listeners might do the same thing. One name we certainly know is Diana Ross, who seems to have been around forever. She is an extraordinary performer. I think the Queen played. Wasn't the Queen a fan of, I think it was Chain Reaction, was one of the Queen's favourite songs from that big celebration of the Queen not that many years back. But she's going to come to Australia. Now, Big Brother, Channel 10 is revived Big Brother, and it is up against some pretty big shows, but the ratings haven't been great. 106:05 No, and they did last week announce that it's coming back next year, but that's not to say they can't change their mind. I mean, the ratings compared to last year are down 35%. I mean, that is a very big drop. And I'm probably not in the core demographic for it, and probably you aren't either, but I just haven't sensed any excitement for the show this year. You know, I read the other day where Harmon was the first to victory, and I had no idea who he was. So there was a time, of course, and times change 25 years ago when it first began. 106:41 You felt those Sunday night eviction shows. You felt like the whole country came to a stop. You know, even if you weren't watching it, you kind of had heard about these people, you know, Sarah Marie and her bum dance and all that kind of stuff. But of course, in the space of 25 years, The world's changed. If you wanted to follow people's lives and people you didn't know, but you somehow wanted to follow them, you know, of course, you've got so much social media, you know, Instagram now, everywhere where you can go and get all that kind of entertainment. 25 years ago, we didn't have that. 107:13 And I think that has to be the reason why the kind of mania that once was there was isn't there anymore. Certainly I'm not sensing it, and certainly the ratings aren't reflecting it. And it's not a cheap show. I would be surprised if Channel 10 probably aren't rethinking their decision to bring it back next year. 107:33 I think in the UK they have a lot of celebrity Big Brother shows, and I was just thinking we had one short-lived celebrity Big Brother. It was back in 2001, and I just... No, it was 2002, actually, and I just had a quick look. It included... 107:50 Kyle Sanderlands ran third. You had Warwick Capper, Anthony Mundine, Red Simons, and I think Burt Newton came in as a one or two. An intruder. An intruder. There's some big names there. I just want to be serious here because I did mention last night In the controversy, which shouldn't have been, in the coverage of that dreadful accident in Florida where the Learjet's gone ploughed straight into the side of a road and the harrowing sounds of the female co-pilot. 114:06 who was talking very calmly at the beginning and then in a panic, and then she was talking to the control. 114:14 And I mentioned last night, because the story emerged, she was 20, had earned a commercial pilot's licence while in high school. 114:20 And she was the co-pilot. I mentioned last night that I saw people who should be ashamed of themselves, who've got actually positions in broadcasting, thinking, oh, here's a good chance to push one of my agendas, talking about it being a DEI hire. And she was hired because she was a woman, not knowing anything. 114:38 and embarrassing themselves as they threw shade at this girl and her family, and this girl had died in the most awful circumstances. 114:47 And I said, people on social media, the scum on social media who were taking pot shots at her as well in the same way, who I'm hoping, I haven't gone back and had a proper look, I'm hoping they've apologised or withdrawn the excrement that they were pouring out. But I see Susan Lee, Of course, the former Liberal Party leader, she's famously a pilot. 115:11 And she's written about how sickened she was to see the attacks, to see some of the people saying the stuff they were saying about her. 115:19 And then she talks about the stuff that appeared on social media. 115:26 The pylon on X and other disreputable corners of the internet, sickening. 115:31 Of course it was sickening. These people, this scum that was writing all this stuff, and she says it feels like sexism writ large directed at a young woman. 115:39 Would the reaction have played out quite the same way had she been a man? 115:43 Has a comparison been made between the junior pilot doing her job and the senior pilot seemingly saying his prayers as the aircraft plummeted to the ground? 115:50 And she was making the point that in these situations you've got, and they don't know because they haven't got the black box, that the pilot's in control and the co-pilot is talking to the people in that control room, the air traffic controllers, who would have themselves been desperate. She says, I hope the controller's response provided some measure of comfort. 116:11 I'm here with you. Talk to me. At a point when they must have known that that dissent was not getting anything other than what actually happened. 116:20 And she says that when she first obtained her commercial pilot's licence at the age of 19, felt ready to take on the world, told the travelling public didn't want a woman in the left-hand seat, I wouldn't be hired. Someone said to her, this is Susan Lee back in the 80s, no one wants to hear this is your captain speaking in a female voice. 116:39 and is hoping that those attitudes have changed. But what's happened on social media with the scum that put all this stuff out, and some of the people, shameful people with media positions who are peddling this stuff, well, she says it was the 80s. 116:57 Many professions carry those prejudices. Some of the reaction to her death suggested not entirely disappeared. 117:03 which is all the more reason not to jump to conclusions. And the difficulty, of course, is they're hoping they'll get the black box to find out what happened. But right at the very beginning, I said, I mean, if it was my daughter, member of my family, whatever, the idea that their stricken, desperate last words... 117:25 were being sprayed all over the world. 117:27 Even that, I think, I found really hard to cope with, but the idea that then you've got this rubbish, this human excrement, exploiting it and saying dreadful things about her. Of course, it was the Senate and the House of Representatives, and in their system, there is a similarity in one way, because the Congress, the lower house, and the Senate, well, the Congress is essentially districts, and they draw districts, like we have seats, and But the Senate, in a sense, is like ours because they have two seats for every state. 121:33 And so even big states just get the two senators. And we have a situation here where we have 12 senators for each of our states. 121:41 So Tasmania elects the same number. So it's far from representative. And I guess you could say the same thing about the Senate in the US, but they get turned over every four years. 121:54 And in the House, they get turned over every two years. In fact, I think it might be a longer term. There are longer terms for the Senate. 122:01 But the whole Congress, the lower house, get turned over every two years. Donald Trump urged midterm election voters to pretend I'm on the ballot. And yesterday they obliged delivering a crushing verdict and a prospect of a lame duck presidency. Repudiation of Donald Trump. And you had battleground seats in Texas, Maine, Iowa, Kansas and South Carolina handed the Democrats control of both chambers of Congress. You had Kansas electing the first Democratic senator in 94 years, and then you had four decades of Republican dominance in Texas. 122:50 In Texas, you had a very charismatic Boy Scout-looking Christian in James Tallarico. He was up against an absolute disaster of a candidate who'd been imposed on the Texas Republican Party by Donald Trump, Ken Paxton. He was a disaster. And then a grassroots campaign by a woman, who was motivated by the fact they tried to shut her school down. She was on the school board, so decided to run for governor and ran a real grassroots campaign based on education. 123:21 She beat the governor there, Greg Abbott, in Texas. So there are a lot of setbacks for the Republicans, and the line was drawn straight back to Donald Trump in relation to virtually all. It's on the front page of all the papers. I'll go to the Courier-Mail's other stories because this is to do with netball. It says netball's all but locked in for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games in a historic debut for the sport. 123:48 The IAC will not vote on the final program until April next year, but highly placed Olympic sources confirm the sport's long-awaited inclusion was a virtual done deal. 123:58 A formal announcement on the sports inclusion in the 2032 program is expected within days. Now, pretty obviously, Australia, you've got Australia, New Zealand, England, some of the Caribbean nations very strong in netball, also South Africa. But if it becomes an Olympic sport and there's a six-year run-up, there may be other nations will try to put together... 124:26 netball programs because there are gold medals available in the same way that we did it leading up to Sydney where we were going to be competing in a number of sports. So that's netball. Very good news for netball. And then they've also got on their front page this story that has concerned a lot of people. This is to do with David Jones. Of course, you get private equity involved. It's never a good thing. And they've been running David Jones for a while and David Jones on the rink of collapse after the retailer rejected a lifeline from its largest landlord. 124:59 Administrators expected to be appointed, and it could happen tomorrow, after the 188-year-old Australian business held an emergency board meeting. That board meeting was late today. There's still no news on that. 125:11 After the company confirmed it had not been able to strike a deal with Major Landlord Centre Group, which operates the Westfield shopping centres that house 17 of its stores. So... There's all sorts of possibilities. 125:22 The stores in Westfield, there's a big question mark over those, question mark over everything. People now talking about whether there'll be a fire sale. So all of that is very much in the balance, and that's on the front page of the Courier Mail. Now, the Telegraph in Sydney. 125:41 I did play this earlier. 125:43 remembering that there's no doubt that inflation has been pushed along by very high petrol prices. You can't deny that because it's the leading cause of the increase in the CPI. But it's also very true that the Reserve Bank Board says that the inflation was already moving before the Iran war and the Reserve Bank Board's made it very clear that government spending is what's kicking it along. 126:13 And so what we had – look, I should play you this. We played it earlier in the program. Because Anthony Albanese is in the Caribbean at the government meeting, and he was asked about this. 126:24 And he said that he hadn't heard what the Reserve Bank governor had said. Now, if you're the Prime Minister of the other side of the world, the interest rate decision is absolutely crucial, and you know how important it is politically – you would make sure your advisors got you the decision and a transcript of the press conference. And if they weren't getting it for you, wouldn't you be just going to your iPad or your phone? Out of curiosity, I want to find out what she had to say. But instead, he's stood up at his press conference and said this. 126:57 I didn't see the press conference, but I'm sure that Michelle Bullock would have acknowledged that all prices have had an impact. 127:05 Yep. So... 127:08 This is what the Reserve Bank Governor had to say. Have a listen to that. 127:10 I want to be very clear that we are not tightening monetary policy because of the direct impact of oil prices on inflation. I know there is confusion in the community, so I want to be very clear. So look, and so the message has obviously gone out. The last two budgets, we've been doing our thing. 128:14 Christy McBain, there are things happening in our economy, not all in government control. That's what led to these circumstances. Andrew Lee, cutting the health budget won't bring down global oil prices. Good economic management means spending wisely, investing in productivity. And they've got Jenny McAllister, primary drivers of inflation, high energy prices and high global prices driven by the war in the Middle East. So that's the message they're sending out. There's no doubt that the war in the Middle East has sparked inflation right around the world. But the issue is that in other parts of the world, I mean, the United States, the effect of the war and higher fuel prices and energy prices has just seen Donald Trump get an absolute pasting in the midterms. 128:55 But it's higher. The number of interest rate rises here have been more. So anyway, that's the front page of The Telegraph in Sydney. 129:03 They've also got civics and citizenship education set to become compulsory for Year 9 and 10 students nationwide amid alarming concerns that primary school pupils know more about democracy than their high school peers. The... 129:21 Now, I've been at school for a long time. 129:43 But the number of people who don't know how our electoral system works, don't know how the Constitution interacts with the states, surely if you're going to make voting compulsory, it should be compulsory but optional preferential. That's another story. But you should be educating people about how the system works. 130:05 And preferential voting. In America, they call it ranked choice voting. How does preferential voting work? It means you pick the candidate you want. And if they don't win, you can then say, well, if they don't win, I want this one. And if they don't win, I want this one. So you basically are saying that you rank your choice. And so the person you'd like least goes on the bottom. 130:27 And you can explain it that way. 130:30 would take 10 minutes. So isn't that being taught? Because a lot of people don't seem to understand it. They've also got this one at 19 past 11, 10 in Queensland. 130:39 It says, speed cameras in one of Sydney's biggest fine generating tunnels have been caught enforcing limits that differ from the electronic road signs. Raising fuse motors might have been wrongly fined. 130:52 Now, there have been investigations into speed limit discrepancies in the Eastern Distributor. 130:57 where last year cameras issued more than 30,000 fines worth $8.25 million. 131:04 State government documents reveal 19 reported incidents involving variable speed limit enforcement systems across New South Wales since 2020. 131:13 One investigation uncovered electronic signs displaying different speed limits to those registered by the speed camera, leading to reports of unfair fines. So I'm sure there'll be a conversation about that tomorrow, because... 131:26 If that is the case, that's a problem because if the cameras are working properly, particularly in places like the Eastern Distributed Tunnel, it's an intelligence test because you drive into that tunnel and there's a sign that says there are cameras in here and this is the speed you go to. That's the headline there in The Telegraph. Now, the Sydney Morning Herald, Democrats take Congress as US voters reject Trump. They've got coverage of all of that. They've got a story about Pauline Hanson, the high court, And judges' war of words. Not often the interests of Pauline Hanson and constitutional law buffs collide, but they're about to as early as tomorrow. 132:37 High courts expected to publish a decision on whether it'll hear Hanson's last-ditch appeal of federal court findings that her, quote, tweet to Green Senator Maureen Faruqi was unlawful hate speech. 132:51 Decision will be short with one pivotal word, granted or refused. 132:57 So that's one that will be sparking conversation tomorrow. That's coming out of the High Court tomorrow. And they've also got this one on what the government might do, because they are talking about... Spending cuts. They've alluded to it. So this story says... 133:29 There's an unprecedented $1.4 billion infrastructure wave driven by green energy and AI data centres now outpacing the mining boom era and making inflation worse. 133:41 So I'm looking here. They're going to be meetings of the – they call it the Expenditure Review Committee when they make decisions about this. But I'm having a look here because they're saying several people said Labor did not want spending cuts that would create protracted brawls only to be torpedoed in the Senate anyway. 133:57 So, based on what I'm reading there, they'll look for things that will either have the Coalition or the Greens supporting them in the Senate, so it'll get through the Parliament... 134:15 And if it's not able to be done, they'll look for ways that they can, without legislation, cut back on spending. So that, I guess, is what they're saying there. We'll hear more about it, I think, in the week ahead. The Donald deflation is the front page here. American voters delivered a stunning rebuke of Donald Trump's presidency. 134:35 They've got Greg Sheridan, Trump the trasher destroys his empire. He single-handedly built a Republican majority in the US, and now Donald Trump has single-handedly destroyed the Republican majority. Don't be fooled by the talk that it was a typical midterm election result. It was an absolute disaster for Republicans and the US president personally. They lost the House of Reps. They lost the Senate, lost a slew of state governorships, all because, he says, Trump asked voters to imagine he was on the ticket. 135:08 And Trump apologists are arguing the fact he wasn't on the ballot suppressed the Republican vote. He is dismissing that, and I think he's 100% right. That's Greg Sheridan. And they've also got, look, this one here, investor Mark Carnegie said, has warned that Australia's bureaucracy has grown like pond scum in size under Labor, and its policies offer an infinitely worse deal for businesses as economists and industry leaders fear the nation is on the cusp of a per capita economy. 135:42 recession and there's also this one because the government's been making a lot of moves on visas in the immigration area and i might do some more on that tomorrow night on our news hour if you listen to our news hour or catch up with it via the podcast because they've made they're trying to make some moves on on working visas and that's to do with trying to get them into the regions they've also made some moves on um foreign offenders these are people who are on these visas it says the government's quietly executed a major backflip in the way visa cancellation cases are assessed dramatically winding back the avenues through which foreign criminals can find a way to remain in Australia Years of controversy over the fallout from changes that made it easier for serious offenders to get their visas reinstated. 136:28 There's now going to be a new ministerial direction that contains fewer paths for those convicted criminals fighting to stay in the country. At 24 and a half past 11 or 10 in Queensland, you know that the decision on interest rates from the Reserve Bank yesterday was 6-3. 136:51 So it was a split decision. 136:54 John Kehoe says, Now, he was one of a couple of people that were out giving interviews, and all those interviews basically were softening us up for an increase in rates. 137:21 And it says some of the seven external board members on the nine-person RBA Monetary Board were shocked when Assistant Governor Sarah Hunter was on the nine 60 Minutes television program eight days before the meeting and declared the Reserve Bank had not quite yet done its job to tame inflation after four rate rises. You've had him and her out there publicly saying, well, interest rates are going to go up. 137:46 When seven others had to be involved in the decision, and at least three of them thought, well, we might have to leave them where they are. Might be too much damage if we do it. So that's there. Also, financial review, DJ's on the brink as talks collapse. 138:00 And I know the Herald Sun in Melbourne. 138:03 I guess this is the way the AFL works. The Herald Sun in Melbourne has across its front page the story of the Sydney Swans player Tom Papley because it emerged late this afternoon. Tom Papley at about 10.30 on Monday was pulled over by police. There was a licence check and he was driving unlicensed and this was a result of a parking fine. There might be a story behind that, but then he was given a roadside drug test And according to the Telegraph, it's reporting that he tested positive for meth and that a sample now has been taken and there'll be that second sample that will be examined. 138:41 And the police have confirmed there that what happened and they're now obviously testing that second sample. And the Swans are saying they have informed the AFL Integrity Unit, probably the last thing the Swans need. All of that's got to go through the procedure. And I think as we saw with Josh Addo Carr, Probably best to wait till we get the second sample, which will come down the track and see what it says. And that's the situation. I guess a lot of our listeners would be, their ears will prick up when they hear about Ticketek and Ticketmaster and dramas with buying tickets and getting a good price and perhaps being ripped off. 146:49 Yeah, I think that the ticketing companies are at the kind of vanguard of this new dynamic pricing and in-demand pricing which is going on, particularly in the UK and the US, but it's starting to come here. And people just, they hate it. It makes them furious because sometimes you'll be in the waiting room trying to buy tickets to your favourite act. 147:13 And by the time you get through to the checkout, the prices have gone up. compared to what you were told at the start. And there's been a couple of examples. Green Day's tour here last year, I think. The John Farnham tribute show in Melbourne, apparently there were some people who faced inflated prices of up to $1,650 by the time they got through to the checkout. Even the NRL finals, apparently there was some in-demand, some seats that were labelled in-demand, you know, halfway through the process and people were asked to pay more for it. 147:43 So... choice has given them a whack and I'm not sure it'll make any difference but it's certainly something that makes people pretty cranky. 147:50 Well that was my question is it going to make any difference and I think often when you've got more people want tickets to an event that are available tickets there's always going to be an issue in how you deal with that so anyway it's up in lights as a result of this report and then you've got Virgin Australia pocketing unused flight credits 148:12 This is another one that I think, you know, it's the horse's bolted on this one. And I'm amazed actually that Virgin got away with this. But in June this year, they retired or pocketed $75 million worth of unused goods. 148:27 flight credits from the COVID period when all those flights were cancelled and there was all that disruption in the airline industry. And, you know, Qantas and Jetstar obviously had tens of millions of dollars of these credits as well. But under intense pressure, they were forced to remove the expiry date on them. 148:45 Virgin dug in and refused to do the same. And sure, true to their word, in June this year, they retired $75 million worth of those credits. 148:58 And that was money that people had paid. 149:00 And they were told, all right, well, because they couldn't fly because of COVID. And they're told, well, you've got to buy a flight by this date or you'll lose the money. So it's their money. It's not like it's some sort of program of saying we're giving you a bonus, this bonus, that. It's their money and they're not giving it back. 149:16 It's their money. The business has taken it. They haven't provided a service in return or a product in return. So, yeah, it's quite outrageous. Virgin says in response that they contacted people repeatedly over many, many months trying to get them to use the credits and that people didn't respond for whatever reason to those requests. But ultimately, it's hard to see why there has to be an expiry date on something like that. 149:45 And the other one they looked at was pet insurance. Now, we know that getting vet treatment for a pet is very expensive. I know from my own experience, we've had a lot of calls about it over the years. And I've had pet cover for one of my... Well, a pet insurance plan for one of my cats. And it worked well. But then I got to a point where the cat was so old and I stopped the policy and I'm just relying on looking after him myself. But... This business of pre-existing conditions, you've got to read the fine print really carefully, don't you? 150:18 You do, and particularly around those pre-existing conditions. So Choices take an issue with the industry in the past because they have been traditionally so strict around not covering pre-existing conditions. 150:34 But this year, Choices found an example that really took the cake, and that was a policy called Pet Cover Economy Cover, where essentially every 12 months they issue an entirely new policy which excludes pre-existing conditions that existed before that year. So in other words, you take a year's worth of insurance for your dog and if the dog develops a condition during the course of that year, then at the end of that year when they renew the policy, the dog's no longer covered for that condition. 151:07 It's hard to see what the point of that policy would be. 151:10 So that would be, I assume, a condition that may have emerged and then the vet has treated the pet for that condition during that year or something to do with that condition. And then they find at the end of the year, because it might be an ongoing thing, that the policy's changed and they're not covered. 151:26 That's right, and I imagine it's probably, it's called pet cover economy, it's probably priced a bit lower for that reason, but it's essentially a sort of single-use cover for conditions that your pet might develop. As you say, you can get treated for them once, but at the end of the year you reset the clock and... 151:46 I don't know what you're going to do if the conditions cause further issues. 151:51 We've spent two days talking about the interest rate rise, official rise in the cash rate, and I'm guessing the advice is the same as always. Contact, if you've got a mortgage or someone's lending you money, contact your mortgage company, your bank, whatever it might be, say, can you do better than what I have now and shop around. Is there a benchmark that you think people should be looking at as what they should be paying? 152:16 Oh, well, I mean, we're waiting now to find out, of course, whether all the lenders will pass on the full cut, but you can bet that most of them will. 152:27 And then we're looking at sort of the lowest rates being in the low sixes. 152:33 And so if you're paying something with a seven in front of it, then there's definitely a good... reason to go and see if you can get something a bit lower even sort of something in the high sixes you may be able to do quite a bit better than that um i think the first move is to call your own lender always and just say is this the best rate you can give me give them an opportunity and um and if they won't play ball then um then see what else is out there there are some there are some lenders out there that are offering three or four thousand dollars uh 153:01 you know cash back on loans with with with rates that are still you know down near the bottom of the market so there's some pretty competitive home loans out there if you are prepared to switch and move around yeah so you just go and have a look on those comparison sites print them out and then you ring your own person and you can either do it up front in the way some people do or say oh my family's pressing me so i had to make this call and they've given me this piece of paper and they're telling me i can get this this and this uh Can you do anything? And they're normally instructed, aren't they, the people that take the calls to handle those in a way that they make some sort of an offer? 153:35 Yeah, they usually have a very clear script what they can and can't say and can and can't do. 153:42 And so you won't be the first person who's called up to ask them that question. It's definitely worth a try. And some of them will be under instructions to work with their existing customers because if they lose you and they have to replace you by finding another customer, it's going to cost them often $1,000, $1,500 to find a new mortgage customer. There's two for every state. There's 100, and roughly a third of the Senate goes to the polls each election.
